I’ll admit I’m just an average guy, maybe even a little below average in most respects, and I guess I don’t see the “big picture.” But I’m always amazed at the things people find to worry about.
I received two emails from people yesterday saying they were canceling their summer travel plans because of Great Britain leaving the European Union. Really? Because of that? Now, they were not planning to travel to Europe, or even through Canada to Alaska. One couple was headed for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to see the Soo Locks and the other was going to New England. What do they expect to happen? The Brits leave the EU and suddenly we close all the roads and highways here in America? Rioting in the streets of Sault Ste. Marie because Great Britain doesn’t want to continue to be part of the EU?
Actually, I don’t know why I’m surprised by those two emails. In the 17 years we’ve been on the road and publishing the Gypsy Journal I’ve heard the same thing from people every election year. They decide to sit still instead of traveling because “we just don’t know what’s going to happen.” I can tell you what’s going to happen – somebody’s going to get elected and a whole bunch of people will think it’s great and a whole bunch of other people be all upset and say it was a great big conspiracy and the country is going to hell. And then they will bitch and gripe for four years, or maybe eight. Meanwhile, I’m just going to keep on RVing, fat, dumb, and happy.
People find way too many things to worry about. You would be surprised how many we know who would not come to our rallies when we were holding them in Yuma, Arizona in March because that’s when they had to leave to go to cold places like Michigan and Minnesota to file their taxes every year. Because if you mail them in and the postmark is not from the address on your tax form, or if you file them online, it raises a “red flag.” Don’t worry about the flag, here’s your sign.
Damn, I’m starting to sound like Bad Nick! I hope he doesn’t come back or I will never get any work done.
Speaking of getting work done, I’ve been trying real hard to work on my new book in spite of a lot of visitors. Don’t get me wrong, we love seeing our friends and meeting our readers, but there are times when we just have to say no. A couple of mornings ago somebody knocked on our door at 8 o’clock. If you have read this blog for more than a week or two you know that we usually work late and we seldom get to bed until 1 or 2 AM. So we seldom get up very early. Basic RVing etiquette is you don’t knock on someone’s door if the curtains are closed, and when somebody knocks on my door that early, I usually don’t hear them. And if I do, I roll over and go back to sleep.
And then last night at about 8:45 someone called wanting to stop over and visit. I told them that we had been busy all day running errands, came home and I started writing, and we had just put our comfeys on for the night and really weren’t up to company, so I said no. We hate doing that, but if we don’t, sometimes we can’t get any work done at all. I hope we didn’t offend anybody, and hope that they will give us a chance again sometime. But it is what it is.
